About Dr. Yakima Young-Shields
Dr. Young-Shields is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, prior to moving to Buckeye, Arizona in 2017. Dr. Young-Shields has more than 40 years of experience as a healthcare provider in the areas of primary care, internal medicine, veteran health, rheumatology, community health, geriatric care, women's health, and psychiatric mental health.
Dr. Young-Shields is honored to have served in the United States Army as Second Lieutenant as a Medical Officer. She has served as the Chair of Washington University Community Advisory Board, whose mission is to address Health Care Disparities in individual Communities.
Dr. Young-Shields has more than 18 years of experience as a professor in higher education, serving as a mentor and facilitator for graduate students. She is the recipient of numerous state, local, and institutional awards for her service as an educator and healthcare professional.
Dr. Young-Shields is committed to providing healthcare to underserved populations who are at risk of implicit bias and healthcare disparities. She is the mother of four children and has six grandchildren, which includes Makaila "Mickey" Melba Young-McMiller. Dr. Young-Shields' faith in God sustains her in all the various roles, including her work as a medical missionary.
